Listed are some Common Pests that live in Indiana

Common Pest: Ants

Carpenter Ants: Large, black ants 1/4-1/2 inch long. They usually swarm in the spring. They excavate wood, creating galleries in which to nest. They prefer to nest in wood damaged by water.


Common Pest: Cockroaches

 

German Cockroach: Medium brown and about ½ inch long .They have two; dark longitudinal stripes directly behind the head. German Cockroaches do not fly.

 

Brown Banded Cockroach: Medium brown and about ½ inch long .Their bodies are golden brown with pale horizontal bands that run across their wings .Adult males can fly but females cannot.

 

American Cockroach: Large and reddish-brown and can grow up to two inches long. Adults are weak flyers that rarely take off from the ground.

 

Oriental Cockroach: Dark brown to shiny black. Approximately 1 ¼ inches long. They do not fly.

 


Common Pest: Spiders

 

Brown Recluse Spider: The Brown Recluse Spider is light brown with a distinctive fiddle-shaped mark on its back .It is a long-legged spider with a body length of about 1/2 inch .The Brown Recluse is poisonous .If bitten by a Brown Recluse ,seek medical attention immediately.

 

Black Widow Spider: The adult female Black Widow Spider has a shiny black body with a red hourglass-shape on the underside; the body is about ½ inch long. The Black Widow is poisonous. If bitten by a Black Widow Spider, seek medical attention immediately.

 

Yellow Sac Spider: Yellow Sack Spiders are small, straw-colored spiders with a body size of about 3/8 inch and front legs that are noticeably longer than the rest. The Yellow Sac Spider is mildly venomous.

 

Wolf Spider: Wolf Spiders are large, hairy spiders almost an inch long. They are colored in various patterns of gray, brown and black. The Wolf spider will bite, but is not venomous.

 


Common Pest: Bees

Carpenter Bees: Resembles a bumblebee but has a shiny, all black abdomen .Carpenter Bees excavate galleries in wood ,where they lay their eggs .The entrance hole is about ½ inch in diameter.

 


Common Pest: Fleas

 

Cat Flea: Adult Cat Fleas are 1/16-1/8 inches long and dark brown with compressed bodies; their back legs are modified for jumping. The Cat Flea is the most common flea species.
